Fun Family Things to do In August

Looking for Fun Family Things to do In August? For us here in Arizona the kids go back in August, but August and September are the official back to school months. Don’t worry we can still pack some summer fun into these dwindling days of summer.

It’s still Fair Season

If you didn’t get to go to a County or State Fair yet this summer, it is still fair season. Ride on all the fun rides, and indulge in that tasty fair food. My personal favorite fair food is Fry Bread. We didn’t have it in the midwest so if you get a chance to try it, do.  Go see the animals. Some fairs rotate the animals in and out on different days, so if you have a favorite to see you should check this before you plan what day to go.

Take a Hike

Visit a National Park, there are plenty of trails to take a hike. If you have little ones you should plan on shorter hiking trails since they probably will not be able to keep up on longer trails. Pack a picnic lunch for the end of the trail.  If you are staying into the evening bring Hot Dogs to cook over a fire (If fires are allowed, check first), and s’mores.

Bowling

Is it too hot to play outside where you are? How about a few games of bowling. This is fun if you have teens, the littles may not be as into it, but they can still push a ball down the alley with 2 hands.  Have a pizza and a pitcher of cold drinks brought to your lane and the party is complete. This is another one of those kinds of things where you could let the kids bring a friend and you get the bonus of meeting the kids yours is hanging out with.

Go to an Arcade

We have a restaurant here called Dave and Busters, it is a full restaurant with an arcade.  Have a meal and a drink then let the kids play in the arcade. There are things for kids of all ages.  If you don’t live near someplace like this just a few hours at the local Arcade would be fun, then go out for Ice Cream after.

It’s Elvis Week at Graceland August 8-16th

So if you don’t actually live close enough to Memphis to go celebrate the King of Rock and Roll, you could throw an Elvis themed party. Play all of his hits and learn some period dances to teach the kids. Have an Elvis contest to see who can do the best impersonation.  I know I don’t usually put regional things in these, but it’s The King!

Go to an Interactive Museum

Here in Phoenix, we have a science museum with lots of hands-on activities for the kids. (OK sometimes I want to push the kids out of the way so I can try it)  When I was a kid we lived in the Chicago area and the fun museum hands down was the Museum of Science and Industry. Find information on museums near you, or ask the kids what museums they might like to visit.

With summer winding down I hope you get a chance to do a few more things with the family before the kids head back to school. Even shopping for school supplies can be a  fun and necessary day trip.  All the anticipation that a new school year brings can summed up on this trip.
