A Quick Way to Make Unique Decor You will Love

Sharing is caring!

I love decorating my home with Chalk Couture transfers. I am not an artist when it comes to hand lettering and drawing (when my daughter was 5 she could draw better than me), but with Chalk Couture transfers you don’t have to be to make beautiful high end one of a kind decor pieces for your home. Come along with me and I will show you how it’s done.  I love that you can mix pieces from different transfers as I have done here,  to make something really unique.

A little too fast? OK let’s slow it down some and go step by step.

Materials:

Chalk Couture Transfers :

Plant Dreams Flower Packet

Flower Market Collection Floral Bouquet

Paste in 3 colors

Tools:

Small Squeegee

Blow Dryer, this is the one I have in my craft room

Step 1 Fuzz

As always we are going to start with fuzzing our transfer. When you get a new transfer it is really sticky, so we put it on a towel so it picks up some of the fuzz and becomes a little less sticky. This helps when you go to take it off of your surface. Just stick it to the towel and run your hand over it a few times.  Trust me you don’t want to be showing someone how to do this and ruin a transfer trying to pull it off. Um, embarrassed.

Step 2 Place

Now place the transfer where you want it on your surface.  Run your hand over it a few times to make sure you have a good stick. The surface I used for this is a small chalkboard is from Walmart. When I bought it, it was around $2.00.  I love these boards because they are so cheap. I usually buy several at a time so I always have them on hand. That’s my official stance anyway, the truth is I am a craft supply hoarder. Of course, you can also use a surface from Chalk Couture. We have lots you can choose from.  You can see them here.

Step 3 Colors

Next, decide what colors you want to use. I used Morning Sky, Wisteria, and Bright White. This is the hardest part for me. There are so many beautiful colors of Chalk Paste that it’s hard to decide. Remember I am a craft supply hoarder, so yes I have lots of colors.  But this is not all that Chalk Couture has. See them all here.

Step 4 Apply Paste

For this project, I used a marbling technique.  Start by making sure that your paste is nice and creamy. If it’s thick add just a spritz of distilled water from a spray bottle. Always stir your paste before you use it. If you accidentally add too much water just let it sit for a while with the lid off. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry out.  Take the first color you are going to use and dollop it on the transfer randomly. Just make sure you get some on all parts of the transfer. Do the same with the second and third colors. Make sure you use a clean squeegee with each color and that you are moving quickly as you don’t want the chalk to begin to dry. You can’t really tell in the picture but you should use a generous amount of paste in each dollop.

How to Marble on Chalk Couture Transfers

After you have all the colors on the transfer take a clean squeegee and start pulling them on the transfer in a swirling motion. when you have swirled the entire transfer scrape off the excess paste. Since it is a mix of colors you have to throw it away.

Step 5 Pull off the Transfer

Now you pull off the transfer and look in awe at what you just made. Pretty cool, right?   When you pull the transfer off you can grab it by a corner, but don’t pull by a corner. Run your hand to a straight edge and pull from there. The transfers have a bias like fabric and if you pull on the diagonal you could stretch your transfer out of shape. You can see in the picture that I pulled the corner but I have run my hand down the side for the big pull.

And the Beautiful Result

This is what it looks like now. It was just a bit plain, so I decided to add some flowers.

Follow Steps 1-5 Again for the Flowers

I would have a hairdryer handy and dry the sign now just to make sure you are not going to mess up the part you just did with the flower transfers. For the flowers, I used the Morning Sky and Wisteria pastes.  Now we are going through all the steps again. Fuzz if you haven’t used the flowers before. Now place the large flower on the right above the text.  The difference here is that we will only be using a single color on each flower.  Chalk it with the Wisteria paste, then pull the transfer. Move quickly because you don’t want the paste to dry to the transfer, but use that same transfer of the other side. Paste it again, and pull. Before you start the middle flower grab your blow dryer and dry the 2 flowers you just made.   For the middle flower, I used the Morning sky color and did the same steps.

All done and ready to show off.

There you have it, a unique custom decor piece using Chalk Couture Transfers, and a little imagination.

Notes

The cost depends on how many times you use the Chalk Couture Transfers. You should be able to get at least 10 uses out of each one. If you make several projects out of pieces of different transfers like I did here the cost per project goes way down.
